In the heart of Ghent, the fate of Arcelor Mittal's local branch hangs in the balance, symbolizing a pivotal moment in the global push for greener steel production. This because of the rising demand of their customers. It will now depend on the region and/or country to provide Arcelor and other steel producers sufficient resources & infrastructure to support them.

This is not the first example where sustainability is the crucial factor in a multinational's strategic decision. And it certainly won't be the last.

Enter the international stage of the ECEEE Zero Carbon Industry conference on January 30th-31st this year, where visionaries, scientists, and EU-policymakers discuss this fragile theme but also converge to shape the future of sustainable industry. Amidst the vibrant discussions and innovative showcases, it becomes evident that the journey to net zero emissions is both a challenge and an opportunity especially for the industry who was unfortunately largely absent form this distinguished international event.

Among the standout presentations were those from the few industry leaders present, like KnaufInsulation and Citribel, showcasing their compelling cases of their journey to Net Zero. Yet, as An Beazar, founder & CEO of Enelyzer,  took the podium, she couldn't help but ask the audience her burning question that was also subject of her keynote speech: How can businesses navigate the evolving landscape of volatile energy markets and mounting expectations for sustainability? Europe sets the bar high, there’s still much work to be done but we can make it work!

This subject, along with other significant themes resonating throughout the conference and highlighted during An’s keynote, remains an area where collaborative efforts are essential to find solutions.

  • Electrification: Will there be enough renewable energy to power this transition?
  • Hydrogen: With the potential to replace natural gas on a large scale, hydrogen emerges as a game-changer. But will the supply meet the demand?
  • CCS/CCU: Carbon capture and utilization hold immense potential as our "wild card" in combating emissions. Industries invest in this after they have implemented everything else (energy efficiency, buffering, etc.). Yet many companies seem to consider this as the first option. So, are we prioritizing it at the right stage of the transition?
  • Storage: From batteries to pumped hydro, the quest for the optimal storage solution is underway. But which technology will reign supreme, and what success factors must be taken into account?
  • Digitalization: The digital revolution offers unprecedented opportunities for efficiency and innovation. European initiatives pave the way for accelerated implementation, but how can businesses harness this potential?
  • Technology: From breakthrough innovations to incremental advancements, technology will drive the transition to sustainability. Yet, the looming question remains: At what cost,, and will the SMEs be capable to keep up and making timely investments to help reduce CO2 emissions?

As the conference drew to a close, one thing became abundantly clear: the path to net zero emissions is multifaceted and riddled with challenges. But amidst the uncertainty, there lies an opportunity for transformational change.
